How to Set Up Your IRS Online Account via ID.me

What you’ll need before you begin





  • A valid photo ID: driver’s license, state ID, U.S. passport or passport card.
  • Your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer ID Number (ITIN).
  • A smartphone with a camera for identity‐verification steps (selfie/video).
  • A valid email address and phone number you can access for multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  • A few minutes of time and good lighting/photos for image uploads.


Step 1 – Start at the IRS site





Go to IRS.GOV and click Sign in at the top right on.


When prompted, click “Sign in with ID.me.”


If you don’t have an ID.me account, click “Create an ID.me account.”



Step 2 – Create Your ID.me Account





  • Enter your email and create a password.
  • Confirm your email address via the confirmation link.
  • Set up multi-factor authentication (text, app, or phone call).
  • Return to the IRS site and sign in with your new ID.me credentials.


Step 3 – Verify Your Identity





  • Select your ID type (driver’s license, passport, etc.).
  • Upload clear photos of your ID (front and back if required). •
  • Take a selfie or short video for identity match. •
  • Enter your SSN or ITIN when prompted. •
  • If automatic verification fails, you’ll complete a short live video call with an ID.me Trusted Referee.





Step 4 – Link and Access Your IRS Service





  • After verification, click “Allow” to share your verified identity with the IRS.
  • You’ll be redirected to the IRS website and signed in automatically.
  • Complete setup of your IRS Online Account and review your details.


Step 5 – Security & Best Practices





  • Never share your ID.me password or codes.
  • Use a unique password that you don’t use elsewhere.
  • Keep your phone number and email up to date in your account.
